Our president John Aldersley kindly produced a report on the visit and provided a number of photographs taken during the evening. The photographs can be seen following the report. Here is a link to the MPM website:- MPM Website
Here is John’s report:-
**************************
Many thanks to MPM for hosting our visit, which was well attended and enjoyed by all those there. Ben Wilson, owner and director, showed the association around.
Ben spoke passionately about the history of the company, having been set up by his father who set the trend for ‘working his socks off’ ! Ben started working for his father after a stint elsewhere and as Ben said it was a long struggle eventually leading to buying his parents out and making major changes to the company.
Ben spoke of significant events, namely a fire destroying the factory when it was on Kent Road in Pudsey. I live just down the road and remember it vividly and Ben told of the sad loss of a brother. All this made Ben (who is the driving force of the company) even more focused. This was obvious to us with his passion and drive throughout the talk and tour.
Ben is a believer in young people, knowing the struggles that they have in front of them, but offered the advice of hard work. Note ! Ben emailed me at 6.10 am on the day of the visit and we left after 9.30pm, he wasn’t rushing us to leave !
.
The company runs to a strict method and to those who aren’t privy to the acronym called ‘5 S’ from my personal prospect MPM are doing it to the letter. Many places manage the first one or two and sometimes the third but give up on the Standardise and Sustain. To many engineers it may be common sense but your president believes it is a valuable tool for us engineers.
Ben spoke of hard work, skilled work, pushing for excellence, and as he has done his time on the shop floor and leads from the front. Work is work and it should be left at work, being another thing he also believes in.
.
The company takes part in the Dragon Boat Race and Ben said they don’t do it to come second. They have won it several times…..
We took a tour of the manufacturing area. Ben didn’t think the association would be impressed compared with the likes of WDS, which Ben had attended. The members were very interested. Your president had visited before, yet I don’t fully understand the processes (being from a machining background by trade) but that did not deter any of us from asking questions. MPM produce some very large items, with some items being for caravans amongst others. The quality is fantastic, all done by very skilled people. The company history is on the wall at the rear of one of the shots.
Who needs gym membership when it’s free at work ? Also, for those wishing to wind down there is a dart board and a pool table. I didn’t ask Ben who was the champion ! He’s very competitive, cycling at a very high level in BMX when young and from there on in.
Many thanks to Ben Wilson. A top man for having us around ! I hope he is not in trouble with his wife, as we did stay quite a while !
.
Thanks also to the council and members who attended, it was great to see you all.
