Report on the visit to The Leeds Welding Company on 31/10/24
Member Neil Cobbold has kindly sent this report on the visit…..
“Last night the Leeds Association of Engineers had a fantastic visit to The Leeds Welding Company premises which started with a brief talk followed by a factory tour led by managing director, Richard Eaglen. The visit started with a welcome meeting in the board room where we were plied with Wilson’s pork pies, sausage rolls, washed down with tea and coffee, whilst Richard gave a rundown on the history of the company and the activities they undertake. I was fascinated watching the computer controlled laser cutting machine, that automatically cuts sheets of steel into intricate parts with extreme speed and precision, automatically working out the fastest and most economical way to complete the task. We then visited the welding shop to witness one armed robot welders going about their business unsupervised, welding pre-jigged waste skips that fit on fork lifts and telehandlers , just one of the many products made and supplied by LWC ! Farm machinery and attachments were another branch of the business, with many varied examples to been seen. Massive presses were seen forming huge sheets of steel into various components, one being a strengthener for trucks the size of supermarket home delivery trucks ! The paint shop and parts department was visited before returning to the board room for questions and answers, the visit now overrunning by about an hour. Finally Richard kindly supplied a few goodies as a symbol of our visit ! All in all, a very interesting and informative evening ! Thank you to Richard and The Leeds Welding Company for their time and hospitality.”
