Leeds Association of Engineers 2023 AGM
We will hold our 2023 Annual General Meeting on Thursday 27th April. The meeting will be followed by an address by LAE member Mark Whitehead on ‘Secondary Metallurgy in Steelmaking‘. Mark has been selling, designing , manufacturing, erecting, commissioning and supporting secondary steelmaking equipment throughout the world for more than 25 years.
Here is Mark’s precis about the lecture topic:-
“Secondary metallurgy is a key part of the steelmaking process. It lies between the primary steelmaking furnace (BOF or EAF) and the casting facilities (continuous casting or ingot casting). It is within secondary steelmaking that the many variations of steel grades (including stainless steel) are made. As well as describing secondary steelmaking in general, this particular lecture will concentrate upon the RH degasser. This process is called vacuum recirculatory degassing and used to remove Carbon, Hydrogen, Nitrogen and Oxygen from the steel as well as allow high yield compositional and temperature adjustments. The RH degasser is designed to recirculate liquid steel (at temperatures above 1550 degC), at flow rates up to 250 tonnes per minute, through a vacuum vessel. The vacuum vessel is held at a vacuum pressure lower than 1000th of an atmosphere. The technology involved in carrying out this process is remarkable and pushes the envelopes of many engineering disciplines.”
The AGM is usually brief and members will have the opportunity to raise questions and make points. During the AGM you will be able to vote for the investiture of the President and Vice-President of the association. The accounts will be presented by the Treasurer for approval by the membership. Only members may cast votes during the AGM, but guests are always welcome to attend.
