Leeds Association of Engineers – Golf Day Report – 2018

The Golf Day was held at Garforth GC on Friday 6th July. A good day was had by all and due to generous sponsorship there were very good prizes, 1st, 2nd & 3rd were Asda vouchers for £60, £50 & £40. Also, there was enough money available to provide a “nearest the pin” prize on all 4 of the par 3’s. Mitchell Fox restricted its interest in the event to a “nearest the pin” putter as a memorial to Stuart Hazeldine, and also sponsored a hole. In the past, while Gerry Allen was the Sales Director, they have regularly supplied up to 20 guests for the day and obtained prizes from their suppliers for prizes. However, now that he has retired they have decided to entertain their customers at Pontefract races. We had to buy bottles of wine and extra golf balls so that everybody received a prize. Without Mitchell Fox guests we still managed to have 31 competitors for the day. Luckily, M. A. Ford stepped in with generous sponsorship and supply of golf balls which had their company logo on, which greatly helped to make the day a success. Next year will be the centenary of M. A. Ford, and I have agreed with the MD, David Ward, to make our golf day part of their company celebrations. It was the 80th running of the Braime Trophy, and Alan Braime supplied generous sponsorship for the event, but was unable to play on the day due to holidays. I will treat him to a round of golf at Headingley GC as a thank you. Gerry Allen was a great help to me in running the day, and deserves a big thank you from the Association. Hopefully he will continue as the “meet and greet” man on the golf day, and help me issue the prizes after the evening meal. Due to the weather, Garforth GC fairways were burnt brown, but the greens had been kept thoroughly watered during the 6 week drought without rain, and high daily temperatures. I congratulated the Head Greenkeeper, Andrew Fowler, on keeping the course in such a good condition, during such a difficult time. Unfortunately, the evening meal service was very slow, due to staff not arriving, but all in all I think that the day was a success.
