Obituary: Ian Scholes

Membership Secretary Malcolm Murray here reports on the passing of LAE member Ian Scholes.
“With deep sadness I have to inform you that our member Ian Scholes passed away on Tuesday 4th August 2026 after a fairly brief illness.
Ian had been a member of the association since November 2009 and had spent a number of years on our council. He had kindly arranged for us to use the Morley Methodist Church for our meetings and was our official photographer until recently.
I first met Ian when I joined Meltog Ltd. in 1992 as a production engineer. Ian was a fitter building the tooling for the canning machines, which was a very skilled job and even a dark art. When he joined the LAE I found out he had worked at Crabtree Ltd. which later became Crabtree Vickers, where I spent my first year apprenticeship as a George Mann apprentice on Water Lane in 1978. Who knows, we may have been sat close together taking dinner in the works canteen. He will be sadly missed….
Ian’s funeral service was held at Tingley Methodist Church on Friday 21st August 2026. Several members of the association were in attendance to pay respects to Ian and his family.”
