The President, Jaswinder S. Shergill, requested that we give some publicity to a very worthy cause.
Our friend from The Welding Institute, Dr. Richard Johnson, supports ‘Lifelites’, a charity which provides equipment for terminally ill children. It gives them the opportunity to use a computer or play a computer game and bring a little joy into their lives. Richard was a guest at our recent annual dinner during which he made an empassioned plea for sponsorship for a ‘Nautical Mile Swim’ that he was undertaking to raise money for his chosen charity. Here is a message from Richard to our president Jaswinder Shergill.
“I want to thank you again for allowing me to appeal for sponsorship of my swim for Lifelites. The attendees (at the dinner) were very generous and sponsored me with £141.00, which I have rounded up to £152.00 and then Gift Aided it so the charity receives £190.00 I did the promised nautical mile swim on the Sunday, starting at 8.06 am, managed to avoid drowning, and completed it at 9.21 am – I am a slow swimmer, so there was some effort involved. At a meeting of the TWI branch in Manchester on Tuesday, where I am secretary, they sponsored me for a standard mile swim with an amount rounded up to £76.00 (swum on Wednesday), and the TWI Leeds branch, where I am president, on Thursday sponsored me for another mile with a rounded up figure of £72.00 (swum on the Thursday) – with Gift Aid another £185.00 together. Thus Lifelites will have gained £375.00 in 5 days, so for me it was a busy week of swimming and fundraising with 3 separate miles to complete – I am glad it only happens once in a while !”
