Your roving reporter John Aldersley spotted an interesting Sunday afternoon guided tour of Lawnswood Cemetery to inspect the graves of local engineers. A bit of an offbeat tour but no doubt will be of interest to all engineers…
The tour commences at 2.00 pm and lasts 90 minutes. Please note that the tour is bookable… See this webpage to book your place. (Complete the form below the advertisement): Engineers Tour
Walking is kept to a minimum, close to the chapels, looking at engineers’ graves and learning of their history. It will give some idea of just how important the engineering industry was in Leeds. Not all are famous but some are. Mechanical and Civil engineers are represented in the cemetery. You will learn about the founder of a Leeds company that built 75 cranes for loading and unloading ships at the newly built 300 acre Tilbury Docks. The engineer who built the Knostrop Sewage Treatment Works and Eccup Reservoir is commemorated here. As an aside you will hear of the Leeds link to the Fox acting dynasty…
Confirmation of places booked with be made by email.
The tour will be conducted by Ann Lightman….
At Lawnswood Cemetery in Adel, Ann Lightman is doing what she’s become known for over the past two decades: showing people the stories behind one of Leeds’ most significant historic sites.
Book directly with the organiser on their webpage and come along for an interesting afternoon tour…
