Report on the Church Service by John Aldersley…..

May 10th 2026 Annual Church Service Report

John Aldersley attended the church service and here provides a report :-

“The association received a very warm welcome from the Rector Reverend Canon Paul Maybury.

Graham Roper our president would like to thank all those who attended. The association stalwarts, Malcolm and Lynne Murray were, as always, in attendance.

Sam Wilkinson our vice president had his first of many visits to the Minster see below :- Graham on the left and Sam on the right of the picture.

The Leeds Minster has some serious history to it and if you like your architecture you will not be disappointed.

All the following is taken from the Minsters website:-   Leeds Minster

The five things to see, that doesn’t include our plaque.

The Church’s website has these five things you should see while there:-

Wooden Statue of St Peter

This depicts St. Peter, the patron saint of the church, holding his symbolic keys. The statue was probably carved in the eighteenth century and was transferred from the old parish church. You can find it over the main door where you came in. As you can see I haven’t a photo of said statue, so please call in and see if you can spot it.

The service started at 10.30 and finished around 11.45 and refreshments were available before and after. A donation for that would be well worth the money.

The association was mentioned almost as soon as the service began, by the Reverend Andrew, to welcome us.

Graham had the task of the reading you see below, I wonder how many different LAE members have done a reading going back to 1865 over 160 years. What a bit of history for the association. I know from my experience, I am honoured to say that I have had a go.

I hope those taking the time to read this will join the association on future visits, I am far from religious and I may say others before me may not be either, but it is a very pleasant event.

I would like to thank Paul for having us join the service and wish him a pleasant retirement on his 66th birthday.”
